Pushing the limits on the new 72ft America’s Cup Catamarans was always going to end in tears for someone. And it was the Oracle team who created history by being the first to 'swim' a 72.
Out on a training run on San Francisco Bay in 25+ knots of breeze, the massive cat has flipped and suffered extensive damage. Fortunately nobody was injured when the cat pitchpoled after digging its bows in during a bear-away manoeuvre.
Last reports were that the wing had been destroyed and the hulls were looking low in the water as the light faded. But it looks worse than that in the video of the wreckage below. The catamaran cost some US$8 million.
"This isn’t going to end well," commented website Sailing Anarchy.
