The New Zealand Millennium Cup has been contested since 2000 and is a regatta for superyachts over 30 metres.
This year the Millennium Cup coincides with the Bay of Islands Sailing regatta in one of the most stunning sailing environments in the South Pacific. Racing starts today (Jan 21) and concludes on Friday, Jan 23.
This year seven yachts will contest the Millennium Cup: Antaeus, Bliss, Janice of Wyoming, Sassafras, Silencio, Silvertip and Steinlager 2.
The Millennium Cup was originally conceived to promote New Zealand as a cruising destination for superyachts and to promote the local businesses that support superyachts in the region. It has gone on to become one of the premiere superyacht regattas in the region.
Racing this year is set to be spectacular with the backdrop of the Bay of Islands and with over 90 smaller yachts competing in the Bay of Islands Regatta.
The NZ superyacht industry has organised a host of on-shore entertainment for owners and crews (yes, some owners do attend) including social, cultural and dining experiences.
The New Zealand Millennium Cup 2015 handicapping will be via the International Superyacht Rule. The forecast for the week looks like clear skies and building breezes which should suit the big yachts.
