NSW boaters warned to stay off the water today

Catastrophic fire risk extends to the water as high temperatures, strong winds hit the coastline

Authorities have warned NSW boaters to stay off the water today as fires burn out of control across the state.

A total fire ban covers the entire state today as firefighters prepare for hot and windy conditons that could flare up more than 70 fires burining in the state. A cold change due this afternoon that coud change the direction of the fire fronts is causing the most concern.

Catastrophic fire danger is forecast for the Greater Sydney, Illawarra/Shoalhaven and Greater Hunter areas. National parks in areas affected by bushfire are closed today.

Temperatures are expected to hit the high 30s in the north of the state. The cool change is expected to go through Sydney late in the afternoon. A wind warning has been issued for coastal regions ahead of the wind change going through.

The change is not expected to bring rain.

“Given the catastrophic conditions across the state, we strongly urge boaters to stay off the water in the coming days until conditions improve,” Maritime NSW said in a post to socila media yesterday.

“The fires are extremely unpredictable, so please take extra precautions and always put safety first.”
