NSW bars dish-out a beating

Big ground swells turn river entrances into devil's playgrounds
Dangerous conditions claimed another vessel on the Wooli Bar on the NSW North Coast last week.
A 5.1m aluminium runabout (pictured) with one person on board overturned on the bar after being hit by a large wave as the skipper was attempting to leave the entrance on a fishing trip on Friday morning.
Marine Rescue NSW Northern Rivers Regional Controller Stephen Reading said the skipper of another boat following the vessel saw the incident and immediately went to the rescue of the fisherman, who had successfully inflated his lifejacket.
“The rescuer then attached a tow line to the overturned vessel and with an incoming tide, both boats slowly returned to the Wooli boat ramp,” he said.
Although activated to assist the stricken boat, the Marine Rescue Wooli crew members on board Wooli 30 were not needed for the rescue but provided assistance to right the capsized vessel, enabling the owner to load it on its trailer.
The vessel sustained significant damage, losing its forward console with its electronics, rocket launchers and seating.
Marine Rescue NSW urges all boaters to Log On with their local Marine Rescue radio base and put on a lifejacket when they get on a boat. A lifejacket never ruined a day on the water.
The big ground swells of late also demand extra vigilance and weather monitoring. Sign up for weather warnings at bom.gov.au and give those coastal bars their due respect when the seas are running.
