The 9th Reel Women Barra Classic is in full swing this weekend, with hundreds of keen fishing fatales from as far afield as Indonesia chasing our iconic barramundi in the Top End.
Established in 2002 by keen female angler Emma Cartwright, who had a vision to encourage other women to cast a line, the female-friendly fishing Classic is pitched as a down-to-earth tournament that invites anglers of all skill levels to compete and just have a boatload of fun.
Teams consists of a minimum of two anglers and a maximum of four anglers. A team may use a male skipper to help get to where the fish are or if they are confident with boating and fishing skills then all-women independent teams are free to cast off.
There are both Champion Team and Champion Independent Team awards bestowed upon the best female anglers. As happens with women fishers, some cracking catches are made. Logically, the biggest barra' are of course all females.
The Lodge of Dundee at Dundee Beach, 140km from Darwin, is the tournament hub. Check out the hot action from the 2013 DVD from the 8th Reel Women Barra Classic below.
