A New York City-based comedy troupe has revealed what it claims is the ultimate in COVID-19 workspaces – a floating office pod on the East River.
Known for pranks that have included riding on the subway without pants, setting up a fake Apple store in a glass elevator and running a marathon – including spectators – inside a building, Improv Everywhere stages what it says are “unexpected performances in public places”.
Its latest stunt is to create what it calls “New York’s Most Socially Distanced Office”, a floating platform including a water cooler, desktop computer with working internet, printer, filing cabinets and a break space.

“The workspace included breathtaking views of the Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Manhattan skyline, providing the ultimate Zoom background,” Improv Everywhere said.
“New Yorkers on land and sea were surprised and delighted by the sight of this extreme work-from-home measure.”
Improv Everywhere said the project also would provide inspiration for the millions of New Yorkers forced to work from home in cramped apartments.
The performance included a real-time Zoom conference call with other Improv Everywhere actors.
People spotting the office space from land were told the iso-desk was a Department of Buildings pilot program that aimed to eventually roll out 4000 floating office pods on the East River, with plans to roll out another 6000 on the Hudson River.
A rowboat was used to deliver snacks to the lifejacket-donned worker, who also received visits from curious jetski riders and a few passing boats.
