New Year's Eve on Sydney Harbour goes green

The City of Sydney has launched a green campaign for the New Year's Eve celebrations on Sydney Harbour, calling on boats to help keep the harbour free of rubbish and cigarette butts.

The celebrations will include fireworks shows by the Foti Family from barges east and west of the Harbour Bridge, and Harbour of Light Parade vessels. Thousands of boats traditionally anchor in the designated viewing zones.

Some tips for those intending to spend the evening on the harbour:

  • Take a radio with you to tune into 2UE for regular NYE updates
  • Securely dispose of butts and garbage onboard and take it ashore
    Arrive and anchor early
  • Do not anchor vessels in the designated exclusion zone
  • Be aware that it may take some time for vessels to clear the harbour after the midnight fireworks and factor that into your plans
  • Obey 'no wash' restrictions and a six-knot speed limit between Cockatoo Island and Steele Point
  • Avoid marked exclusion zones from Cockatoo Island to Clark Island
  • Access to Man O' War steps will be restricted with the Sydney Opera House closure
  • Obey the no alcohol, no glass rule
  • Keep under the 0.05 alcohol limit if you are the master of the vessel
