Whittley has released a new keenly priced 19ft trailerable fishing boat, the CW 1950, which is based on the original John-Savage-made Mako hull but with a whole new deck and modernised layout.
While pitched as a purpose-built sportfisher, the CW 1950 is really a great all-round cuddy-cabin that doesn’t skimp on family comforts. It’s light enough to be towed by a large sedan or smaller SUV, while working well with a frugal four-stroke outboard from 115hp.
As part of Whittley’s CW or Clearwater range, value is very much part of the equation. The CW 1950 package with a four-stroke 115hp Yamaha F115B outboard engine and Mackay dual-axle trailer package was priced from $56,990, excluding freight and pre-delivery charges, at the time of writing.
HULL PEDIGREE
The CW 1950 is promoted as an efficient sportfishing platform that slices through chop and delivers excellent stability when drifting or at anchor. Hull deadrise is a good all round 19 degrees, with a fine entry.
Whittley Marine Director of Sales and Marketing Alan Whittley isn’t shying away from the fact his new CW 1950 is built on the award-winning John Savage Mako hull — this writer bestowed the classic a Boat of the Year Award in its day — but with some modifications, he adds.
"The Whittley R&D team have enhanced the styling with a slick new dash that can accommodate a 16in screen, a flat transom, folding engine well and folding door.
"They’ve also given the hull more aggressive chines and moulded boarding platforms, adding to the hull’s already impressive bluewater credentials.
"The updates were based on feedback from existing customers and fishing clubs consulted in the redesign process. The CW also showcases Whittley distinctive sport-fishing look," he says
INNOVATIVE FEATURES
The new features of the CW 1950 include a innovative walk-through transom door, moulded aft boarding platforms, and greater beam than the original to boost stability.
There’s plenty of room to store your catch in the uncluttered cockpit and underfloor fish box, while full-length side pockets add to the tackle storage.
Anchoring is easy with the convenient walk-through configuration (it was always a winning feature on the original Mako), allowing excellent forward access to the separate anchor locker and large bowsprit. Freeboard is another strong point and will be appreciated by snapper and reef fishers while setting the pick.
The roomy cabin has a comfortable vee-berth for a snooze and seated headroom when the fish go off the chew. The bunk cushions and side-pocket storage come standard. There are also twin standard eskies that are easily stored under the driver and passenger seats. These go together to create a modular rear lounge.
Whittley attributes its new folding engine or splash well panel with creating one of the largest fishing cockpits in the CW 1950 in this boat's class.
There are handy toe rails to slide your feet under when leaning outboard, say with the net or gaff, and safe cockpit depth.
KEEN PRICING
The CW range features three models — the newly launched 1650, this 1950 and the 2150 flagship — and all outboard-powered and keenly priced.
The CW 1950 comes standard with bimini top, bow rails, side windows, two-tone hull, bunk cushions and storage.
With a four-stroke Yamaha 115hp outboard and Mackay dual-axle trailer, 1950 CW package prices start from $56,990, excluding freight and pre-delivery charges.
"It’s important that we offer Australian families a complete range of fiberglass trailerboats with outboard and sterndrive options. The popularity of the outboard-powered 6m family fishing boat is obvious. The good news for customers is our CW 1950 is packaged up with all the popular options for less than $60,000," Alan Whittley adds.
