The Boating Industry Association (BIA) of NSW is working with state government authorities on finding a new location for the Sydney International Boat Show.
A new venue is needed following news that the Entertainment Centre at Darling Harbour will be demolished. Both the convention and exhibition centres will be closed for up to three years, it was reported this week, as the precinct undergoes a $1 billion makeover.
Eventually, the fully integrated convention centre will increase by two thirds to 20 hectares and will include the largest exhibition space in Australia at 40,000 square metres. That’s a good thing.
Meantime, just where our precious boat show be housed after this year’s 45th Sydney International Boat Show (opening August 2) remains up in the air.
Domenic Genua, Marketing and Events Manager with the BIA, said they will likely retain a wet display at in Cockle Bay, but that it could be a split show, with Homebush or Moore Park, both proposed by NSW government, as possibilities for the dry display.
“We’re working with government agencies who acknowledge the importance of the Sydney boat show economically,” Genua told Boatpoint and Boatsales today.
But for the low air draught of two bridges crossing the Parramatta River, Homebush Bay would be a natural for a big-boat display too. So, how about White Bay?
The new Cruise Passenger Terminal will be finished in March 2013 and, looking at the graphics accompanying this article, it contains potential exhibition space.
You could moor boats stern-to along the shore, as they do in Europe, run the show right around the waterfront and into Rozelle and Blackwattle bays, which have various marine-related business. Ferry showgoers from the city or use the transport links already established for tourists in any case.
