New Sea Ray SLX 350 bowrider with triple 300hp outboards

A super-sized 35ft outboard-powered bowrider that ‘feels like a 747’ when you power up

Yes, you heard it right. The biggest bowrider in the new 2017 five-star Sea Ray SLX fleet now comes in an outboard variant using a rack of triple 300 to 350hp Mercury Verado outboard engines. But is the SLX 350 OB really that way-out?

As the banner brand of Brunswick Marine, which also manufactures Mercury engines and owns other marques like Boston Whaler which has long been running racks of outboards, it makes sense to introduce some successful bluewater-performance into its pleasure-boat line-up. After all, who wants to bang?

In typical Sea Ray fashion, there is some real pedigree in the SLX 350 OB hull. The triple rack of 300-350hp Mercury Verado outboards drives a low-slung 21 degree deadrise hull with dynamic running surface designed for great handling and a smooth ride through the rough stuff. An optional auto-trim system is available, but joystick seems standard.

"I’ve just driven the SLX 350 OB at the American dealer conference. It felt like a 747. It’s quiet but with that multi-engine hum as it glides up to planing speed. It’s got grunt and such acceleration," enthused Mark Chapman, the NSW Sea Ray importer, when we quizzed him upon his return.

Sea Ray says the new SLX 350 Outboard is a no-trade-off vessel with more space for friends and family, more power for the activities you love, more ease, more style, and more fun all around.

The storage initiatives run to a huge rear locker for stashing watersports gear, various coolers, a dedicated stern anchor compartment, even special hanging lockers for evening wear. Of course, there’s an in-built amenities centre and a huge swim platform for day-boating pursuits. Local dealers will take care of your barbecue mounts.

The maxi bowrider has a step-down bathroom and head with pressurised water system and optional hot water, while the day seating and rating extends to 18 people, making this the ultimate outboard-powered summer party boat from the well-loved Sea Ray stable.

Sea Ray's Next Wave innovations run from the Quiet Ride system designed to reduce noise to the purpose-designed Dynamic Running Surface and the agility of Joystick piloting and docking.

Options include an LED lighting package, a large opening sunroof with several radar arch designs, and a retractable SureShade that is said to shade the entire aft section of the boat.

Triple 300hp Mercury Verado outboard engines come standard, with power options up to 350hp, with either black or white cowlings.

"It’s just the tip of the iceberg with what Sea Ray has planned," Chapman says, "expect even bigger boats in future and even quad outboard set-ups."
