Sailing his 31.5 metre maxi trimaran Banque Populaire Armel le Cleac’h has sailed 682 nautical miles to claim the solo 24-hour distance record.
To achieve this record, Armel had to average an astonishing 28.4 knots.
The previous record, held by Francis Joyon, was 666nm. Armel Le Cleac’h, twice runner up in the Vendee Globe race, is attempting to break Joyon’s solo record for the Chrisopher Columbus ‘Discovery Route’ from Cadiz (Spain) to San Salvadore in the Bahamas.
Joyon’s record for the 3884nm journey is eight days 16 hours seven minutes and five seconds. As at Monday (January 27) le Cleac’h was 370nm ahead of Joyon’s position when he set the record.
Armel and Banque Populaire are currently experiencing higher than expected trade winds of 28-30 knots but the conditions are forecast to ease for the last 1000nm to San Salvadore.
