New Nissan Patrol boosts towing capacity to 3700kg

The all-new Nissan Patrol will arrive in Australia in early 2027 with more interior space, a larger cargo area and a higher towing capacity than the outgoing Y62 generation, as Nissan continues to reveal details of its new flagship SUV.

While much attention has focused on the Y63 Patrol's move from a naturally aspirated V8 to a twin-turbocharged V6, Nissan says the new model also delivers meaningful gains in passenger accommodation and practicality.

When we drove the final V8-powered Y62 Patrol last year, its biggest strengths remained its cavernous cabin, strong towing credentials and long-distance comfort.

The Y63 appears intent on building on all three.

Nissan says the new Patrol provides more room for passengers across each seating row, with the largest gains reserved for those in the second and third rows.

A new sliding second-row bench allows buyers to balance passenger space and cargo capacity, while Nissan claims rear-seat occupants can enjoy up to 250mm more legroom than the outgoing model when the seats are adjusted rearward.

The third row has also been redesigned to better accommodate adults. Compared with the Y62, rear-most passengers receive an additional 75mm of hip room, 66mm of knee room and up to 253mm more legroom when the second row is moved fully forward.

Access has also been improved through a new tilt-and-slide second-row mechanism that can still operate with a child seat installed, replacing the Y62's tumble-seat arrangement.

Cargo space increases across every configuration.

With all three rows in place, boot capacity measures 577L, rising to 1594L with the third row folded and 2749L when both rear seating rows are stowed.

Those figures represent increases of 110L, 181L and 127L respectively compared with the outgoing Y62 Patrol.

Loading larger items should also be easier thanks to a near-flat cargo floor, while PRO-4X and Ti-L Reserve variants gain adaptive air suspension that can lower the rear of the vehicle for improved access.

The Patrol's towing credentials have also been strengthened.

All grades are rated to tow up to 3700kg braked, a 200kg improvement over the outgoing model's 3500kg capacity.

Every variant gains Trailer Blind Spot Warning and Trailer Sway Control, while higher-specification PRO-4X and Ti-L Reserve grades also receive Trailer Docking Support and an electric trailer brake controller as standard.

The latest details follow an earlier leak that revealed Australia will receive six Patrol variants, making it the broadest local Patrol lineup to date.

The Patrol has long been a popular tow vehicle for Australian boaties, and the Y63’s increased 3700kg braked towing capacity gives owners a little more breathing room when hauling larger trailer boats.

That extra 200kg won’t suddenly put substantially bigger boats within reach — owners still need to account for the combined weight of the boat, trailer, fuel, batteries, safety gear and everything else carried aboard — but it could prove useful for heavier offshore fishing boats and larger fibreglass trailer boats that can push towards the traditional 3500kg towing ceiling.

The addition of Trailer Sway Control and Trailer Blind Spot Warning across the range should also be particularly relevant when towing a large boat, while selected variants add Trailer Docking Support and an integrated electric trailer brake controller.
