New Mercury Diesel 6.7L engine

The new Mercury Diesel 6.7 litre mid-range engine is arriving in early 2018

Unveiled at the 2017 Miami International Boat Show, and now due in Australia in early 2018, the new electronic common-rail Mercury Diesel 6.7 litre mid-range engine come in three power variants — 480hp, 500hp and 550hp.

As we revealed earlier in the year in this
Mercury Diesel 6.7L news story, the engines are well suited to single installations on 25-35ft boats and as twins on up to 50 footers, using either shaft line or sterndrive units.

For further flexibility, the 6.7L can be used with the Mercury Zeus pod-drive technology. The engines are fully compatible with Mercury’s full suite of SmartCraft controls and electronics, including optional joystick piloting for inboards and joystick piloting for pods (Zeus).

Designed to deliver substantial improvements in acceleration and top speeds, the new common-rail engines use a matched turbocharger design coupled with electronic common-rail fuel injection technology and a state-of-the art Bosch EDC17 engine control system. When the rebranded diesel engine was first released in 2015, it had mechanical fuel injection.

Utilising design features and materials specific for marine applications, the new Mercury Diesel 6.7 litre diesels are said to be extremely durable with low fuel consumption and an extended travel range.

Branded Mercury Diesel, and customised for the company, the new 6.7 litre engines are actually assembled by FPT Industrial’s dedicated marine engine plant in Milan, northern Italy, which is said to employ the latest in quality controls.

"Expanding into the mid-range diesel market offers Mercury the opportunity to deliver on our brand promise to customers in this premium boat segment," said Reinhard Burk, Mercury Marine Senior Director of Diesel & Propulsion Strategy.
