New Marine Rescue RIB for Coffs
Twin 250hp Suzukis for 40 knots and a range down to South West RocksA new $362,000 offshore rescue vessel arrive at the Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour over the weekend, boosting the emergency capability of Marine Rescue NSW volunteers on the busy State’s Mid North Coast.
Coffs Harbour 30 is a 9.5 metre Naiad, able to travel up to 30 nautical miles offshore and it will be tasked throughout the Solitary Islands to the North and as far South as South West Rocks if required.
"Coffs Harbour 30 will be a significant improvement to rescue operations in the Coffs Harbour area providing a state of the art vessel on call twenty four seven ready to assist the boating community," Marine Rescue NSW Regional Controller for Mid North Coast, John Murray, said.
"It will become an important part of Marine Rescue’s strategic search and rescue safety net of offshore vessels covering this region," he said.
Coffs Harbour 30 is a significant investment in the safety of local and visiting boaters and also of our volunteers. Built by Yamba Welding and Engineering, it is also an investment in jobs in regional NSW.
The RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) is powered by twin 250hp Suzuki engines and can reach speeds above 40 knots (74 km/h).
State-of-the-art electronics installed on MRNSW vessels include Raymarine navigation and radar, Sailor VHF, GME 27 MHz and DCN marine radios, Furuno AIS (Automatic Identification System) and FLIR thermal-imaging camera, along with advanced first-aid equipment including cardiac defibrillator and oxygen.
"Over the past 12 months Coffs Harbour members have also raised just under $24,000 for a modern air berth for the new vessel," Mr Murray said.
The Coffs region is exceedingly popular with boaters of all bents and its at-times boisterous bar entrance, rough open waters, busy rec and commercial fishing fleets, and the lure of its offshore island groups, all contribute to plenty of calls for help and rescues in the region.
