Victoria's favourite inland water playground, Lake Eildon, is back up to 98 per cent capacity after being almost empty after 14 years of drought, and business is booming.
The Victorian Water Minister, Peter Walsh, visited the lake this week and announced major changes to houseboat licences on the waterway. Walsh said new houseboats up to 20 metres by eight metres (65x26 ft) would now be allowed on the lake.
The changes for commercial licences will come into effect almost immediately and the legislation will be changed by the Victorian parliament to allow for more houseboats.
The Minister said the local community would be surveyed over the coming months to get their views on proposed changes to houseboat operations as well as other recreational and evironmental matters.
Battered by the long drought and then the Black Saturday bushfires, the local community was suffering badly before the rains came.
Now with the lake almost full, restaurants and businesses reopening, Lake Eildon is set to again be Victoria's favourite inland waterway.
