Mercury Marine has officially released a new generation of Mercury Diesel engines for sale and shipments will begin to key boat builders forthwith. The numerous upgrades and refinements to this popular Diesel series include more power options, Mercury SmartCraft compatibility and worldwide emissions compliance.
Using a VW engine, new 370 horsepower 4.2L V8 Mercury Diesel TDI is said to set a new benchmark for low noise and vibration, with an industry-leading, unmatched power-to-weight ratio that delivers outstanding acceleration. Twin variable-geometry turbochargers (VGT) provide peak torque at 2750rpm with virtually no turbo lag, Mercury says.
TDI 4.2L V8 Engine Overview
>> Unmatched performance from an engine that powers exclusive, power-oriented vehicles like the AUDI Q7® and A8 packaged in a propulsion system designed specifically for marine applications
>> Excellent acceleration enabled by exceptional torque at low engine speeds reduces time to plane
>> Fuel savings versus gasoline options will approach 50 per cent in many cases, extending range correspondingly
>> High power engine allows replacement of big block gasoline V8 without sacrifice in acceleration or top speed
>> Peace of mind is delivered by the Mercury global service network
>> Industry-leading horsepower to weight ratio
Meanwhile, the 3.0L V6 Mercury TDI engine claims high power density in a compact, lightweight package. The VGT provides peak torque at 2000rpm, resulting in reduced time to plane and outstanding overall operating characteristics. This powerful compact package is available in 230 and 260 horsepower.
The 2.0L I4 engine combines reliable power in 150 or 170 horsepower with a compact, robust design. The VGT provides peak torque at 2000 rpm for reduced time to plane and superior performance.
Along with additional power options, the latest Mercury Diesel TDI engines are fully Mercury SmartCraft-compatible, allowing boaters to access dozens of engine, boat and navigation functions with Mercury's extensive selection of namesake digital gauges and multi-function displays.
SmartCraft compatibility also enables boaters to specify optional Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS) control systems and Mercury Axius Joystick docking control.
Built on a proven platform, the new generation Mercury Diesel TDI engines are complaint with worldwide emissions regulations, including European RCD 2, US EPA Tier 3 and BSO 2.
Smooth and quiet, Mercury Diesel TDI engines are said to provide automotive-like quality and reliability and are backed by Mercury's global service network. Look for them in sterndrive-equipped production craft from now on. The engines have been on test and available Down Under for some time already.
