NSW Roads and Maritime Services has updated its boating and personal watercraft safety handbook to make the rules of the state’s waterways even easier for users.
The makeover includes a new online format that mirrors the information in the handbook, as a downloadable book with interactive links, and in hardcopy form from Service NSW outlets from February 15.
The new handbook comes in the wake of a massive jump in the number of new boat licences issued last year as people turned to boating in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The handbook features clickable contents on topics, including:
NSW Maritime acting executive director Andrew Mogg Mogg said the new handbook’s release coincided with a jump in boating activity and more people buying boats and getting a boat licence.
“We recorded a nine per cent increase in new boat licences issued in 2020 compared to 2019, as well as a nine per cent increase in the number of new vessels registered,” Mogg said.
“All boaters are reminded to always wear a lifejacket – don’t risk your life. In NSW, seven out of 10 people who drown while boating are not wearing a lifejacket.”
