New Back Cove 41 flagship

Maine boatbuilder announces its biggest and best Back Cove ever

In keeping with the American tenet that bigger is better, Maine-based boatbuilder Back Cove released plans of its truly inspiring new 41-footer flagship at today’s Miami International Boat Show (MIBS).

Scheduled to be displayed in the flesh or fibreglass at MIBS next year, the new 41 builds on the timeless design, Downeast styling, traditional lobster-boat lines and seagoing lore of its sister ships: the 30, 34, 37 and new Downeast 37 ‘dayboat’ featuring enlarged cockpit.

But the layout of the Back Cove 41 clearly flaunts some true big-boat features: there are two double cabins and two bathrooms, with a single American-sized shower stall. The for’ard cabin features an island king-sized bed on the centreline, while the aft cabin has a transverse queen bed.

There is also a side-deck helm door, standard generator and reverse-cycle heating and air conditioning. A huge amount of space has been set aside for storage, with a dedicated downstairs commissary-cum-utility and lazarette space. Cruising buffs will welcome the room for stowing victuals.

The galley is up top and back aft in the single-level saloon and bridgedeck, where there is a communal U-shaped lounge and dinette, plus additional seating opposite. The dinette converts to a U-shaped settee by deploying a second tabletop, which is also the base of the outboard cushion.

Lots of opening glass and a seaworthy superstructure most definitely hark back to the Maine boats of yore. The spoon bow, sweeping sheerline and tumblehome add to the boat’s poise and grace, which is enhanced some more by coloured hull options.

In keeping with the Back Cove’s roots and designer Kevin Burns’ DNA, the new 41 is powered by a single Cummins QSC8.3 600hp electronic common-rail diesel engine, with all local boats fitted standard with bow and stern thrusters and more.

Back Cove importer Jed Elderkin from E Marine expects the Back Cove 41 to be a big hit with Australian boaters. The twin double cabins and bathrooms, galley up and big cockpit, with single-engine sensibility, puts this gorgeous 41-footer on the discerning boater’s shopping list and in rarefied air.

“The new 41 is really bringing Back Cove into the big boat cruising fraternity. As we enter our seventh year in the Australian market, the Back Cove brand has become both well known and highly regarded by knowledgeable boat owners and prospective owners. We have delivered Back Cove models of every size and variant throughout the country,” ever-the-affable Jed says.

“We see her as a magnificent cruising vessel offering all the attributes that have made Back Cove such a resounding success. Economy, reliability, safety and ease of maintenance are just a few of the hallmarks that set Back Cove apart.

“Not sacrificing performance, the new 41 will offer cruising speeds of 20 knots with standard power and joystick control dockside with Back Cove's optional Proportional Docking System.

“Australian boaties love function, style and practicality and the new Back Cove 41 will offer all this in a vessel as capable on a long-distance cruise as she is in her local anchorage,” Jed adds.
