Proving a big hit already, this Back Cove 32, the first in Australia, is acutally #10. The next 32 is #23 and it's due to arrive in Sydney later in 2017.
With a new hull and modified tunnel, higher sides and more freeboard, the 32 has improved performance. It’s not so much in the top speed as the quietness and lack of slip in turns.
Top speed from the standard single 370hp Yanmar V8 diesel engine — a LandCruiser derived motor — is 25 knots, but it’s the a smooth and agreeable cruise that appeals. There are also bow and stern thrusters for ease of docking.
We’ll report on this new Back Cove 32 in greater detail in coming weeks. Meantime, we couldn’t hold back with the news that this terrific new model has arrived from Maine ahead of its official launch at the 50th Sydney International Boat Show opening August 3, 2017.
The Back Cove boats start with a 30 footer and end with the 42, but this new 32 has cleaner and more robust Down East-styled lines. The bowsprit has gone and the boat looks better for it.
With walkaround decks and a single-level cockpit, saloon and helm station, the 32 is an easy boat to get around. The galley and seating are all up top, creating a great layout and all-weather living area for social cruising, family boating and weekends away.
On the accommodation front, Back Cove has pulled off a masterstroke. There’s a full queen-sized double with a lot of room around the bed thanks to a split head and separate shower stall. Headroom is a highpoint.
The cherrywood joinery, with maple dovetail drawers and cedar-lined hanging space, adds to the salty feel. With the convertible dinette making a second double bed up top, this is a great little boat for sleeping a family or a couple.
You can get bigger engine options for 27-28 knots — the next 32 has 425hp Cummins — and generator and air-con. But we found one of the best Back Coves in the fleet to date in the simple harbinger we tested. This 32 package was priced at about $535k.
There are now more than 50 Back Cove boats plying Australian waters, all
imported by Jed Elderkin also from Maine, who has been in business locally
for 12 years.
Our full review and video of the Back Cove 32 drops soon. See the boat at the 50th Sydney International Boat Show opening August 3 and any time at E Marine Motor Yachts.
