New app for east-coast anglers
GPS-based app guides anglers to Australian east coast marine parks and takes the guesswork out of legal fishing zonesA unique new app developed by a Hunter region fisherman has been launched to help ocean anglers avoid costly fines in protected marine zones, including the 98,000-hectare Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park which is the largest marine park in NSW.
Putting an end to confusing paper maps, the GPS-based Marines Zones app profiles 32 offshore marine parks in Qld, NSW and Victoria and alerts fishermen when they approach or are in one of the parks with a list of fishing restrictions applicable to the area. Marine parks in other states will be included during 2016.
Marine Zones spokesman, Glenn Stewart, from the Hunter town of Largs, said the app offered live GPS tracking and alerts, up-to-date advice on marine park rules and works even when mobile phones are out of range.
"Large zones like the Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park include a variety of regulated areas so by using the app, a fisherman gets an alarm on their phone when they cross the invisible border of the park, with the app then outlining what they can and can’t do in that area," said Mr Stewart, who has listed his app business as a member of Destination Port Stephens.
"The app takes the guesswork out of mapped zones and can save anglers a lot of money in fines," he said. "There’s no more worry about being in the wrong spot and the app also helps fishermen to be environmentally responsible."
Available for download from the App Store or Google Play, the Marine Zones app costs $5.99 for the Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park or $19.99 for coverage of all NSW’s marine parks. For all QLD’s marine parks, the app costs $9.99, with coverage of Victoria’s parks costing $24.99.

The Port Stephens - Great Lakes Marine Park protects marine life in a 150km stretch of water from Forster south to Anna Bay in Port Stephens, including Broughton and Cabbage Tree Islands offshore.
