"Casting towards tomorrow -- keeping Australia fishing" is the theme of the National Recreational Fishing Conference held on the Gold Coast, with the future of recreational fishing clearly in its sights.
Recreational fishing contributes greatly to the social, lifestyle and economic aspects of Australian society and recreational fishers make up a considerable proportion of the Australian community.
Recreational fishers seek at all times to be environmentally responsible and always try to ensure fishers operate in an environmentally sustainable manner and follow environmentally responsible practices.
"Approximately four million Australians go fishing each year but few would know about the work that goes on behind the scenes. Many of those involved with recreational fishing are volunteers and do it for the love of fishing," said Russell Conway, Chair of Recfish Australia.
As part of the conference, awards will presented to those who have contributed to recreational fishing throughout the year. The 2012 Recreational Fishing Awards will be presented by Recfish Australia in association with the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and aim to recognise the considerable amount of time and effort devoted to recreational fishing by community groups, fishing clubs, individuals, governments and organisations.
"There have been some outstanding nominations in the past years which have demonstrated the level of commitment and dedication that the nominees have displayed, sometimes over many years," said Mr Conway. "There is also some amazing scientific work that has been completed that has assisted in the improvement of recreational fishing practices in Australia. This research has contributed greatly to the development of environmentally and ecologically sustainable recreational fishing methods and attitudes.
The awards will be presented at the National Recreational Fishing Conference.
