Multihull Solutions signs up TAG Yachts
Super-fast production cat with innovative safety system heading for AustraliaMultihull Solutions has expanded its 2014 stable of prestige brands after being chosen to represent TAG Yachts in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
Touted as producing arguably the fastest production-built cruising catamarans in the world, TAG Yachts complements the Multihull Solutions range of brands that now caters for the individual budgets and requirements of jut about every buyer.
From its shipyard in South Africa’s Saint Francis Bay, TAG Yachts currently produce the Tag 60 (XR) full-carbon high-performance race cruiser, and Tag the 60 (GT) world cruiser that combines performance and luxury with some of the most unique advanced safety features on a sailing catamaran. Prices for the TAG 60 range start from AUD$2.2 million.
In association with Young Yacht Design, TAG Yachts has also recently launched the Tag 50 CRUISE, GT and XR models, starting from AUD $1 million. Several other new models are under consideration ranging from 30-foot sport catamarans to adventure cruisers and larger custom yachts.
TAG Yachts managing director Tim van der Steene said the company’s mission is “to build exciting yachts that provide a sailing experience commensurate to today’s extreme sports ethos.”
“TAG Yachts are equipped with state of the art technology allowing them to be sail unaided. They can be sailed with a small crew not compromising performance and comfort while engaging in an exciting race, or they can be cruised quickly to destinations so there is maximum time for relaxation with family and friends,” Mr Van der Steene said.
The cats are equipped with comprehensive safety systems to ensure the extreme limits of the boats’ performance cannot be exceeded. The system reads the loads in the rigging and hydraulic systems as well as the heel angles, and reports the data to a central computer. If the maximum loads are reached, an audible and visual alarm is activated to alert the crew. Should this alarm be ignored, the computer releases the mainsheet, main traveller and jib to completely depower the yacht.
Multihull Solutions managing director Mark Elkington said the TAG 50 was extremely impressive when he conducted a recent sea trial in Cannes.
“The catamaran was performing to wind speed in conditions from 7 to 20 knots, often recording 11 knots in just 9 to 10 knots of breeze,” Elkington said. “It is undoubtedly one of the best performance boats on the market, yet does not compromise on onboard comfort, style or safety.
“TAG Yachts perfectly fills a void in our range, and we can now offer clients even wider choice including cruising catamarans that deliver extreme speeds in luxury.”
The first TAG catamaran is due to arrive in Australia in 2014.
