More than 3000 volunteers perform 3000-plus rescues

Marine Rescue NSW thanks its 3000-plus volunteers during National Volunteer Week

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Stacey Tannos has thanked the organisation’s 3000-plus volunteers for their commitment to saving lives on the water — and encouraged members of the public to thank all the volunteers in their communities, too.

In 2014-15 alone, Marine Rescue NSW volunteers:
>> Rescued 3001 vessels in trouble on the water – including 775 in life-threatening emergencies
>> Responded to and made a total of 310,342 marine radio calls
>> Logged On 70,243 recreational vessels to help them stay safer on the water
>> Contributed almost 620,000 hours to serve the community
>> Delivered boat and jet ski licence courses to 1349 individuals and
>> Devoted additional time and effort to earn more than 2200 training qualifications.

Commissioner Tannos said National Volunteer Week, which runs until Sunday May 15, was a great opportunity for everyone to give a volunteer a pat on the back.

"This week gives us all the chance to say thank you to the six million volunteers across the nation for their vital contribution to all sectors of our community," he said.

Marine Rescue NSW has more than 3000 volunteers in 45 units along the coastline from the Queensland border to Eden and inland on the Alpine Lakes and the Murray River at Moama.

"We would not be able to provide our essential safety services to the boating community without each and every one of these men and women. I thank them all for the dedication, skill and time they devote to their roles," Commissioner Tannos said.

"The NSW boating public is much safer on the water thanks to the vigilance of our volunteers. They deserve our gratitude and praise, not just this week but every week."

Commissioner Tannos also encouraged members of the community interested in volunteering to get in touch with their local Marine Rescue NSW unit.

"We welcome new members who are interested in serving their community and becoming one of a team of emergency service volunteers. It’s a richly rewarding experience," he said.
