According to data obtained from the snapper acoustic tracking project, funded by the recreational fishing licence fees, snapper catches are about to increase in Port Phillip Bay.
Last season, the first tagged snapper detected entering through Port Phillip Heads was on September 1 and the last one detected entering was on December 3. Most tagged snapper entered the bay between mid-October and early November.
In both 2011 and 2012, snapper were detected leaving the bay as early as mid-December through until early May.
If you catch a snapper with a black, bullet shaped, transmitter tag in its gut cavity, please keep the tag, record the date of capture, measure the fish and contact DEPI Fisheries Scientist Paul Hamer on 5258 0288 or paul.hamer@depi.vic.gov.au.
