Motor vehicle manufacturers are reluctant to put their cars head-to-head with those from the opposition but no such modesty existing in the boating world.
Mercury Marine is happily boasting that its new OptiMax 150 ProXS direct injected outboard can thrash it major opposition, the Evinrude E-TEC 150 HO, in both speed and fuel economy.
Mercury took a Triton TR-18 Pro 18 foot fiberglass bass boat an OptiMax 150 to record a top speed of 94.5 km/h at 5568 rpm. Changing the engine to the Evinrude E-TEC 150, they recorded a top speed of 87.2km/h at 5409 rpm. The Merc was over seven kilometers per hour faster.
When the fuel consumption was measured, the OptiMax 150 used 36.7 litres per hour when cruising at 46 km/h. At the smale speed they claim the Evinrude used 42 litres per hour.
They are also claiming that that the OptiMax is more environmentally friendly than the Evinrude.
No doubt Evinrude is already working on a series of tests to prove that Mercury is incorrect and its engines are the pick of the bunch.
Whoever wins, it promises to be an interesting public brawl.
