Mercury Racing has used the opening day of the 2020 Miami International Boat Show to reveal an all-new version of its 60R outboard engine, optimised for shifting smaller boats over shallow waters at high speed.
The 60R remains a lightweight 1.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine, but wide-open throttle is lifted to 6300rpm, giving owners maximum acceleration and a wider range of propping options.
The outboard engine also uses a single overhead camshaft to keep it as light and slim as possible for what Mercury Racing says is “less intrusion on the transom”.
The Mercury Racing 60R also steps up its charging game and comes equipped with an 18-amp alternator to top up the batteries needed to run power-hungry electronics and circulating livewells.

Below the waterline, the Mercury Racing 60R features a 4.25-inch gearcase capable of taking up to 20 per cent more prop blade area compared with a standard case.
It is also redesigned to provide more lift for hole-shot performance, and more stability at speed.
Mercury Racing said the new 60R was optimised for a 15-inch transom where it offered a lower centre of gravity for better boat handling and stability. In the enclosed water-happy US, this also will allow skiff owners to mount a lower poling platform over the transom.
There is no word yet on Australian availability.
