Men in small boats at risk

In NSW, there were eight fatalities and 92 serious injuries from 322 boating incidents from 2013-14
Earlier this month, the Maritime Management Centre released the report 'Boating incidents in New South Wales – Statistical Statement 2013-14.'
General Manager Maritime Management Centre Howard Glenn said the report highlighted the good news that boating fatalities were well down on previous years with eight fatalities in the 2013-14 financial year, compared with 27 in 2012-13.
"The statistics for 2013-14 represents a decrease of 70 per cent and is the lowest number recorded in the last 20 years. This result has restored a long-term downward trend in recreational boating fatalities," Mr Glenn said.
"The report however reinforces the need for men in craft under six metres to take extra care while out on the water."
All of the recreational boating fatalities for this period involved a vessel of six metres or less in length, and five of the seven victims were male.
These findings mirror the results of previous years and highlights the need for continued education in relation to men in small boats.
The report also recommends that more ongoing work needs to be done to improve boating safety particularly in terms of preventing serious injuries and educating people on the importance of wearing a lifejacket.
"Although there were fewer boating fatalities, three out of the four people who drowned in 2013-14 while boating recreationally were not wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident," Mr Glenn said.
"Boating is a relatively safe activity but our efforts are to build on positive trends. Making lifejacket wear a habit, is the key to preventing fatalities in smaller boats," Mr Glenn said.
It was noteworthy that four out of the seven recreational boating fatalities occurred in the early to mid-morning, between midnight and 10am.
The report suggests an ongoing gradual improvement in overall boating safety due to the total incident rates for both recreational and commercial vessels continuing to fall.
