Melbourne to Vanuatu update

Alive breaks the record, two retirements, others still have a long way to go

Tasmanian yacht Alive (formerly Black Jack) skippered by Duncan Hine, has taken line honours in the Melbourne to Vanuatu yacht race and established a new record for the 1885 nautical mile race.

Alive finished at 10:22:45 eastern standard time on Sunday (July 6) to establish a new record of five days 23 hours 52 minutes and 45 seconds.

The previous record of seven days, 17 hours, 06 minutes and 00 seconds was held by the late Andrew Short who set it in 2006 aboard his Volvo 60 Andrew Short Marine.

On Monday morning (July 7), the second-paced yacht, Jazz Player (Matt Lawrence) still had 749nm to go while the boat bringing up the rear, Myuna (Geoff Nixon) had over 1000nm to the finish.

Two boats have retired: Ariel II has returned to Melbourne with boom damage and Geomatic (Adrian Lewis) has pulled into Sydney with a similar affliction.

Interestingly, the boat currently lying in third place, The Secretary (George Shaw) is entered in the newly-formed Rally division of the Melbourne to Vanuatu race.
