Melbourne to Vanuatu starts

Classic 1885nm race sets sail after weather delay

The Melbourne to Vanuatu race got under way today (June 30) following a postponement of 24 hours due to severe weather on Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait.

Seven boats will be contesting the 1885nm race while two others, The Secretary and Myuna will be sailing in the Rally division.

The Melbourne to Vanuatu race was first run in 2006 after skipper of The Secretary and past Commodore of the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria George Shaw visited the islands and proposed the race to enable other sailors to visit this ‘paradise on earth’.

The race is a Cat 1 event as is the Rally, but Rally participants can stop whenever and wherever they like.

A mix of boats and crews have entered the M2V from the smallest, Ariel II a Jeanneau 36.2 to the big RP 66, Alive.
