It's a warm welcome to the annual Melbourne Boat Show opening today from 10am to 9pm. Oh, yeh, it's cold outside. But inside the sprawling Melbourne Exhibition Centre the heat is on. After all, with all those boat dealers under the one big roof something has to give. In a climate like this it's usually the price. Catch a bargain-priced tinnie, trailerboat, some tackle and the latest cool kit.
Without going into an exhaustive pre-show speil, there are some honest standouts this year. Brands debuting new trailerboats include Anglapro, Barcrusher, Bayliner, Chaparral, Crestliner, Crownline, Evolution, Four Winns, Haines Hunter, Hobie (fishing kayak), Larson, Malibu, Sailfish, Savage, Spy, Stabicraft, Sea-Doo, Sealegs, Sea Ray, Streaker, Surtees, Yamaha, and more.
Hey, even the sailing craft like the MacGregor 26 power sailer, are trailerable.
Then there are the auxiliary items, the rafts of electronics, fishing gear, tackle, safety gear, ride-ons and toys -- including the Seabreacher that turns you into a human dolphin -- outboards, anchors, props, repair kits, and so on.
If you need a breather or beer, a premier attraction at this years show, say organisers, is a custom-built bar area.
The so-called Manspace is a boutique bar for exhibitors, hosts, VIPs and boating enthusiasts to gather over a refreshment and catch a glimpse of boating superstars and celebrities such as Billy Brownless and Sam Newman.
Today's Melbourne Boat Show features watersport world champions such as Grant Harrison, the world champion powerboat racer, as well as oodles of kids activities and family fun to help bring some sanity to the school holidays.
Savvy buyers use the Melbourne Boat Show in the off-season to strike up a deal and get prepped for summer. Meanwhile, the industry considers the show as something of a barometer for the grassroots boating market.
See you on our B31 stand today from 10am. Happy hunting.
