Melbourne becomes a sailing mecca

ISAF World Cup returns

The first leg of the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup will again be held at the Sandringham Yacht Club after it hosted an outstanding event last year. The action will on and off the water from December 12-18 this year.

Sail Melbourne will again be the first stop of the prestigious ISAF Sailing World Cup with the competing teams then heading off to Miami, Palma, Hyeres, Medembik and Kiel before finishing in Weymouth, England, the site of the London 2012 Olympic sailing events.

Yachting Australia's high performance director Peter Conde says organisers are expecting even larger number of international sailors. "Sail Melbourne will be an increasingly important regatta for the Australian Sailing Team and the Australian Sailing Development Squad in 2010 and 2011 as we ramp up our preparations for London 2012," Conde says, "This guarantees some exciting on-the-water action."

While the competitive racing will be on the water, a vast array of engaging lifestyle events and attractions is being planned on dry land -- much of them focused around the state-of-the-art surroundings of Sandringham Yacht Club.

Victorian Sports Minister James Merlino says he was delighted with the success of Sail Melbourne in 2009 and believes it provided an excellent platform for the event to grow into one of the State's signature events.

"We are looking forward to giving the event the warm welcome back it deserves this year as it cements its place in the State's action-packed summer of top-class sport," Merlino says.

Olympic hopefuls from around the world are expected to compete in the event.
