Maxum 1800SR Bowrider

Maxum Marine has been manufacturing a range of luxury trailerable fibreglass runabouts and daycruisers since 1987 and is now the fourth largest builder in the US

Available in Australia from NSW-based Webbe Marine, the Maxum range encompasses eight models from 5.5-7.0m.

The 1800SR is Maxum's entry level bowrider and along with the rest of the manufacturer's '99 model runabouts features: "the largest makeover in the company's history with an abundance of new 'Eurostyle' features and design details".

According to Maxum, the changes are "intended to rekindle interest in the line with a well designed interior and ergonomics borrowed from the luxury car industry -- an understated style offering spaciousness and comfort."

Family and friends are accommodated on port and starboard sleeper seats, and a roomy aft seat that converts to a sunlounge. According to the maker, it is thoughtful touches like the moulded cooler and ventilated canvas storage that are highlights in the cockpit package.

The opening windscreen is made of tempered safety glass and opens at the centre to access the bow. The bow seats feature back cushions with stowage underneath.

Further storage is provided in padded side panels and vented underfloor compartments featuring a removable vinyl liner.

The full complement of instrumentation including speedometer, tachometer, voltmeter, oil pressure, temperature, fuel and trim gauges grace the moulded dash. Also standard is a digital depth indicator. The padded five-positions steering wheel with tilt is fitted standard. Rack and pinion steering is also standard, while powered-assisted steering is included on all optional engine fitouts.

In outboard configuration (1800XR) the standard powerplant is a 125hp Mercury which boasts a top speed of over 75kmh at 5100rpm and cruising speed of 55kmh at 4000rpm, the company says.

Alternatively, the 1800SR's standard 135hp 3.0lt MerCruiser takes the craft to a top speed of almost 65kmh. The optional 4.3lt V-six MerCruiser powers the new Maxum to speeds in excess of 74kmh.

The boat, motor and trailer package with the 3.0lt Merc is priced at around $36,500 while the 190hp 4.3lt powerplant takes the price to $41,500.

The final option is a 4.3lt 210hp EFI MerCruiser sterndrive, priced at $44,500.
