Massive overnight boat blaze in Sydney
Luxury vessels at Cabarita destroyed by suspicious fireNSW Police have established a crime scene following a massive blaze overnight causing the damage and destruction of a number of luxury cruisers moored at a Cabarita marina west of the Harbour Bridge.
Emergency services were called to the Cabarita Road wharf shortly before 3.00am (Tuesday, December 3, 2013) following reports of a loud explosion.
Upon arrival, NSW Fire & Rescue crews, together with officers from Burwood Local Area Command and Marine Area Command, attempted to control the blaze. The fire went on to destroy a number of luxury high-end vessels and possibly damaged others.
Fire crews has since said they found four pleasure craft well alight. Due to the fire, a small runabout broke away from the wharf and has subsequently sunk. Two 52ft vessels also sank at the wharf and a 60ft vessel was badly damaged.
More than 30 firefighters from eight stations attended the blaze and extinguished the blaze. Specialist crews were still working to secure the fuel and debris from the affected boats.
During their investigations, police have been told a small vessel, believed to be about 15ft with an outboard motor, was seen leaving the area shortly after the explosion was heard.
Police will continue their investigations and are keen to speak with anyone who may have heard, or seen anything suspicious, in or around the waterway between 2.30 and 3.00am today.
