Maritimo makes a worldwide splash

Flagship M73 is off to Texas, plus two new sub-50 foot models set for Sanctuary Cove

Premier Australian boat builder Maritimo has made the first overseas sale of its flagship M73 Motoryacht that had buyers and admirers lining up at last year's Australian boat shows.

The company has taken an order for hull number 4 from a client in Texas and an order for number 5 from a client in Singapore. The luxury motoryacht bound for the United States is already under construction at Maritimo's Hope Harbour facility on Queensland's Gold Coast. The Singapore client confirmed his order last week after a sea trial off the south coast of Queensland.

"We are delighted by the market's response to this magnificant craft," Luke Durman, Maritimo's managing director, told BoatPoint, "We knew it would be accepted quickly in Australia but we are very pleased with the international response."

Durman says the US boat will be similar to the one displayed at last year's Sydney International Boat Show with upgraded Caterpillar C32 turbo diesel engines rated to 1652hp. The Singapore-bound vessel will feature an eye-catching metallic bronze coloured hull.

The sales cap a very successful year for the luxury yacht builder. Maritimo had healthy sales at all the major Australian boat shows despite the world economic downturn that saw several boat yards around the world facing serious financial crisis.

Durman returned to Australia last week after attending the Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show.

"Our dealers continue to make sales even though we are competing in the international market with a strong Australian dollar and most of our competitors holding excess stock," he says, "It puts us in a particularly strong position as the US and European economies begin to recover."

Maritimo CEO Bill Barry-Cotter says he is pleased with the way his staff had handled the economic crisis. "The first half of last year was difficult but the company has been taking on new staff over the past four months as sales pick up," Barry-Cotter says. "The new M73 orders will certainly stretch our staff resources."

He said Maritimo would launch two new models in the sub-50 foot range at the Sanctuary Cove boat show in May and a further four new models throughout the year.
