Maritimo adds Scania engines to North American boats

Queensland motor yacht maker Maritimo can now sell its R Performance Edition models to US, Canadian customers

Queensland luxury motor yacht brand Maritimo will fit out performance versions of its X-Series boats destined for North America with Scania engines in a move that’s likely to boost jobs for both the boat and engine maker.

The Scania engines will be fitted to the upgraded R Performance Edition versions of the Maritimo X50 and X60 sedans sold into the potentially lucrative North American market.

Maritimo already fits the Martitomo X50R with a Scania-sourced 13-litre 800hp DI13 inline six-cylinder engine and the X60R with Scania’s 16-litre 1150hp DI16 V8 for Australian customers, but the new deal with Scania means the shaft drive engines will now also become standard fit for North America.

The Scania units fitted to the Maritimo X60 make it one of the fastest motor yachts ever built at the motor yacht maker’s recently expanded Coomera yards.

“For more than a dozen years Maritimo’s customers around the world have enjoyed the unparalleled power and efficiency of Scania engines,” Scania US marine sales manager Al Alcalá said.

“Our engines are designed specifically to meet the needs of performance brands, and with the recent release of our 13- and 16-litre engines, certified for the North American pleasure craft market, we are pleased to extend our business partner to include Maritimo’s sport motor yachts being built for US and Canadian boaters.”

Maritimo said it was excited to extend its relationship with the Swedish commercial transport specialist based on the level of service support that Scania had provided in Australia.

“Scania’s product ethos align closely with those of Maritimo – performance, efficiency, economy, reliability and dependability, are areas where Scania have met and exceeded our expectations of an engine partner in our longstanding relationship,” Maritimo lead designer Tom Barry-Cotter said.

The performance-honed R Performance Edition versions of the Maritimo X50 and X60 were revealed ta last year's Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show featuring a number of enhancements, including a special ZF-sourced gearbox, to improve their speed on the water.

The engine upgrades push the boats' top speeds to well above 30 knots.

The DI13 and DI16 engines feature a lighter-weight iron engine block and a wastegate turbocharger that simplifies the system for servicing.

Scania said Maritimo’s North American customers would also benefit from Scania’s Smart Support system, which is yet to make its way to the Australian market.
