Maritime precinct for Berrys Bay
Lease agreement the "initial step"Member for North Shore The Hon Jillian Skinner this week announced the plan to transform the eastern side of the Waverton Peninsula at Berrys Bay into a maritime and recreational precinct had started with an agreement for lease signed.
"Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) with Government Property NSW as land owners have today signed an agreement for lease with Pacifica Developments," Mrs Skinner said.
"This is the initial step in the planning and development process.
"RMS and Government Property NSW want to ensure the site is improved for maritime and public recreational use.
"The agreement for lease sets out the conditions Pacifica Developments must adhere to before a formal lease can be granted for the site. It is one of the first steps in the planning process.
"The bay has been used by the port and maritime industry since the late 19th century.
"RMS and Government Property NSW own a 4.3 hectare portion of land and water on the western shore of Berrys Bay.
"Government Property NSW owns 1.6 ha of land covering the lower section of former BP oil terminal and the former Woodleys Shipyard. This land is zoned for waterfront maritime use.
"RMS owns the 3.5ha of adjacent water area in Berrys Bay which has been set aside for over-water development.
"Pacifica Developments has modified its 2009 proposal for the site after community and council feedback. The new proposed plans reduce the size and scale of buildings on the foreshore, increase open recreational space and retain the site’s heritage structures including the Woodleys shipyard building and the existing quay line," Mrs Skinner said.
The new proposal would include:
- A marina facility
- Dry vessel storage
- A vessel workshop area
- A public car park
- Improved public foreshore access
- Open recreational space, including an playground and picnic area
- Space for maritime businesses such as a ships chandlery
- Space for food retail outlets such as a cafe or restaurant.
"Heritage items such as the Woodleys Shipyard shed and the existing quay line would be retained as part of the proposal, Mrs Skinner said.
