Marine Industry Bodies Merge

As part of federal and state government initiatives to unite a number of independent marine industry associations under the one banner, the Gold Coast Marine Industry Association (GCMIA) has merged its operations with those of the Boating Industry Associa

GCMIA president Charles Dickson said the move was in keeping with recommendations made under the federal government’s Marine Industry Action Agenda (MIAA) and would increase the local industry’s bargaining power when state and federal government representations were necessary.

Under the new arrangement, the GCMIA will continue to operate as an incorporated association under its existing name; however, it will officially become the Gold Coast division of the BIAQ.

Dickson said the Gold Coast’s leisure marine industry had experienced tremendous growth in the four years since the association was formed, expanding from about 150 companies employing about 1500 people in 2002, to more than 400 companies employing more than 4000 people.

Gold Coast boatbuilders now produce about 80 per cent of the boats built in Australia.
