MGC president, Charles Dickson, said the new name reflected the association's alignment with Marine Queensland (formerly BIAQ), as well as the strategic industry branding being promoted by the Gold Coast City Council's Department of Economic Development.
"The marine industry is now the Gold Coast's third largest industry behind tourism and property development," said Dickson.
"Its 400-plus companies employ more than 4000 people and generates in the region of $250 million worth of exports each year.
"All sectors of the Gold Coast's marine industry are facing a range of significant issues which are impacting upon their future profitability.
"Our aim is to promote the industry's strength and to encourage a unified industry approach through which we can communicate our concerns and seek co-operation from all levels of government," Dickson said.
The MGC board elected at the AGM are: president Dickson; vice president John Hogan; secretary Michael Hinde; treasurer Lesley Blacklock; and, committee members Ken Blacklock, Roger Tauffel, Mike Harvey and David Smallbone.
Dickson said the new board comprised a broad cross section of the local marine industry, including manufacturing, marina operation, tourism charters, sales and marketing.
