Marina expansion plan

Plans by coastal developer Meridien to significantly expand Mega Marina in Horizon Shores, Queensland, will help to address a growing demand for boating facilities, according to the company

Meridien chief executive officer Warwick Bible said a space now had to be made to store a boat for every seven new homes built on the Gold Coast.

He said the number of boat registrations on the Gold Coast had broken the 20,000 mark, with the figure expected to reach 40,000 by 2016.

Subject to council approval, Meridien plans to more than double the current capacity of the marina to 1350 wet berths, create up to 40,000sqm of marine industrial space, provide a 1000-capacity boat stacker, and develop a fully integrated waterfront eco resort, yacht club, retail village, and a major marine-based retail hub.

The expansion is expected to cost more than $500 million.
