A man facing drug-related charges in Western Australia has been caught in Queensland trying to flee Australia – on a jet ski.
Australian Federal Police said yesterday that the man, believed to be an English national wanted on drug-related charges in Western Australia, was seen launching a jet ski loaded with supplies and extra fuel at Pundsand Bay on Cape York, Queensland, on March 25.
It is believed he was trying to get to Papua New Guinea. Police said it was also believed he was armed with a crossbow. Images released by the AFP show the man on the jet ski, and later the jet ski where it was intercepted.
The man was caught after a Border Force cutter found him stranded on mud flats on the eastern side of Saibai Island, about 10km off the PNG mainland and more than 100km from where he set off.
The man was taken on board the cutter and transported to Thursday Island where he was held by Queensland Police pending extradition to WA. The jet ski was towed to Saibai Island, the AFP said.
“This arrest sends a strong message to would-be fugitives – our reach across Australia is second to none and we will use all our contacts and relationships to find you and bring you before a court,” the AFP said.
