A Canberra man was last week jailed for two years after he went out and bought a jet ski on his government-issued credit card.
The Australian Federal Police said the 48-year-old man used a credit card issued by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation to buy a number of items worth more than $300,000, including a road bike, security systems, white goods, power tools, electronics and the jet ski.
Police also alleged the man used government money to buy gym memberships and to contribute to the cost of buying two vehicles. His corporate spending spree, made between 2012 and 2017, was picked up after CSIRO balanced its books and worked out that something didn’t look right.
The matter was referred to the police, who raided the man’s home and found all the items. He later pleaded guilty to two counts of dishonestly causing a loss to a Commonwealth entity, as well as a charge of using forged documents.
The AFP said the man was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, to be released on a good behaviour order after serving 12 months.
