Malibu Boats Australia has asked more than 80 owners to park up their boat in the driveway until they can get the steering system checked to see if a nut has worked loose.
According to documents filed with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the consumer watchdog responsible for monitoring problems with everything from cars to bedside lamps, Malibu’s issue relates to the way the steering cable is attached to the boat.
The size of the recall is so large because the steering system is fitted to every boat made at Malibu’s Albury, NSW-based manufacturing base.
Models affected include the Malibu Response TXI, Malibu Wakesetter models including the 20VTX, 21LX, 22LSV, 23LSV and 23MXZ, and Axis Wake models including the A20 and T220.
According to the recall notice, a retaining nut used to prevent the boat’s steering cable from detaching from the boat’s rudder block may fail, leading to a loss of steering control.
“Steering loss may cause an accident, resulting in death or injury to the boat occupants or bystanders,” the document warns.
Voluntary recall notices are usually issued after a manufacturer notices a problem with a product that may make it unsafe. It can be as simple as something picked up during regular after-sale maintenance or servicing.
