The mind games and generally thumbing of noses has started to heat up in the America’s Cup with Luna Rossa taking to the waters of San Francisco Bay on the weekend clearly in defiance a request from the Review Committee formed after the fatal crash of Artemis.
The Committee had requested that all teams not go out. A statement from the Committee read: "Following the first meeting of the America’s Cup Review Committee on Thursday (May 16) in San Francisco, teams have been asked to suspend all sailing in AC72 and AC45 catamarans until the middle of next week (presumably May 22)."
But Luna Rossa went for what looks like a full-blown training session on Saturday in conditions that were quoted as between “three and 12 knots”.
Luna Rossa Challenge 2013 skipper Max Sirena declared: "The weather today was ideal for our first trial out on the water; from a technical standpoint it allowed us to test safety measures, loads and manoeuvres. However the really significant aspect was psychological: it was important for the crew to resume sailing on the AC72 and to get back into its normal training mode to prepare for the upcoming races. In the next few days we will continue with our training and development program as scheduled."
We’ll keep you posted as the build-up continues to the start of serious racing in July.
