Long-Term plan for the Reef

The Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan has been released for public comment

The Australian and Queensland governments have released the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan for public comment for a six week period until October 27.

The Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan is the overarching framework for protecting and managing the Great Barrier Reef from 2015 to 2050. The Plan is a key component of the Australian Government's response to the recommendations of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

The Plan has been developed by the Australian and Queensland governments in close consultation with partners including the resources, ports, tourism, fishing, agriculture, Indigenous, local government, research and conservation sectors.

The Plan targets identified areas of action and seeks to address gaps for future management of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

At the core of the Plan is an outcomes framework that will drive progress towards an overall vision. To quote the plan: "In 2050 the Great Barrier Reef continues to demonstrate the outstanding universal value for which it was listed as a World Heritage Area and supports a wide range of sustainable economic, social, cultural and traditional activities."

Public comment is now invited on the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.

For more information on how you can comment and how your information will be used, visit the Consultation page, read the Frequently asked Questions or email GBRlongtermplan@environment.gov.au.

During the consultation period the objectives, targets and actions which underpin the Plan will be reviewed by experts in the relevant fields. The outcomes of this review process will be considered when revising the Plan in consultation with the Partnership Group. It is expected to be submitted to the Great Barrier Reef Ministerial Forum for endorsement in late 2014.

The Plan will then be submitted to the World Heritage Centre in late January 2015, for consideration at the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee June/July 2015.
