Lifejackets save the day
Rogue wave capsizes tinnie but crew preparedRoads and Maritime Services (RMS) Acting General Manager Boating Operations Scott Kidd has reminded boaters of the importance of wearing lifejackets after three men were rescued unharmed after their boat was hit by a rogue wave off Crowdy Head near Taree.
“About 10am yesterday (April 9), three men in their 50s were anchored while fishing in a 4.5 metre aluminum open runabout when a rogue wave capsized their vessel and all three ended up in the water,” Mr Kidd said.
“Fortunately, all were wearing lifejackets as is the requirement for anyone who ventures out in a vessel which is 4.8 metres or smaller."
A nearby fisherman witnessed the incident and was able to retrieve the trio from the water within minutes. None of the men was injured.
Their boat was later recovered by the local Marine Rescue NSW crew and towed back to Crowdy Head.
Despite the flat sea conditions at the time, it is always crucial to be prepared for the unexpected when boating.
“RMS will investigate,” Mr Kidd said.
