Lifejacket Regulations

The Victorian Government is seeking more feedback on proposed regulations for the use of personal flotation devices (PFDs), in Victoria.

Minister for Transport, Peter Batchelor, annouced the release of a Regulatory Impact Statement for public comment after consultation with more than 3000 members of the public, the boating community and stakeholders since 2004.

The public can comment on the draft regulations and recommended legislative changes.

Recommendations include that PFDs must be worn at all times by the occupants of powerboats up to 4.8m in length while underway; by the occupants of powerboats 4.8–12m in length, and all keel and trailerable yachts at times of heightened risk, for example, when boating alone, at night or in hazardous conditions.

New requirements are proposed for the carriage of safety equipment. The recommendations follow the deaths of 53 recreational boaters on Victorian waters over the past four years, with 15 of these deaths in 2004.

Marine Safety Victoria will be accepting written submissions from the public until the October 24. It is anticipated any regulation changes would come into effect on December 1.

A copy of the proposed regulations and Regulatory Impact Statement is available online at www.marinesafety.vic.gov.au or by phoning 1800 223 022.
