Alloy Yachts, the Auckland-based builder of some of the world's most luxurious sailing yachts, has taken the wraps off Kokomo, the stunning 191.6 foot sloop it has built for Sydney-based property developer Lang Walker.
Walker already had a previous 150 foot Kokomo, also built by Alloy Yachts, that was regarded as one of the most desirable sailing vessels in the world -- but it is put into the shade by the new yacht.
The three-deck sloop is so long that it appears to be sleek rather than bulky, despite having room for 10 in the owner's party and a crew of 12.
With an overall length of 58.4 metres (191.6 ft) and a beam of 10.9 metres (35.8 feet), the yacht is one of the largest modern sailing vessels in the world. Weighing in at 450 tonnes, it carries 1914 square metres of sail on its single towering carbon fibre mast.
The yacht draws 4.9 metres (16.1 feet) with its centreboard raised, a draft that will make the captain and crew nervous when negotiating areas of coral in tropical waters.
The vast sail area is controlled by an in-boom furling system and a series of powered captive winches, so everything is push button. Docking is aided by a 150hp hydraulic bow thruster and if the wind drops there are twin 872hp Caterpillar engines to keep the yacht moving. Power is supplied by two Caterpillar C4 generators.
A flying bridge with twin helm positions and seating for 10-12 passengers tops the yacht and all the main deck is devoted to recreational space. There is a large bar, an outdoor dining area, a formal indoor dining area and a vast lounge area. Windows with specially hued glass give 360 degree views, while a second helm area (for use in inclement conditions) is ahead of the dining and lounge areas.
The lower deck is devoted to accommodations; the owners suite, near the stern, is full width and there are four guest cabins, two twins and two doubles, all with their own ensuites. Forward of the engine room is the crew quarters with five cabins, a commercial kitchen and separate crew lounge.
At the stern of the yacht is a full-width fold-down swimming platform that hides the garage for the tenders and the other water toys.
Alloy Yachts has given no indication of how much the construction cost. Check out Alloy Yachts.co.nz for more details on the super sloop.
