Lake Bonney reopens to canoes and kayaks
After 30 years, one of SA's largest freshwater lakes open to human-powered craft. Powerboats nextThirty years after it was closed, Lake Bonney in the state’s South East has been reopened for use by human-powered vessels.
Following extensive public consultation the lake has been reopened to canoeists and kayakers.
It is one of the largest freshwater lakes in South Australia and is located 450 km south east of Adelaide and 13 km south west of Millicent.
Lake Bonney was closed after the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires when logs were stored in the lake for future recovery and milling. Since that time, water quality has improved and many of the logs have been removed.
At the request of the South Australian Recreational Fishing Advisory Council Inc. (RecFishSA), the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) conducted inspections at the Lake.
Given the relatively low risk of injury to those using human-powered vehicles, such as canoes and kayaks, DPTI, in conjunction with the District Council of Grant and Wattle Range Council, supported the reopening the lake.
The department will continue to engage with local residents, councils, Aboriginal communities, environmental groups and other agencies with the aim of further removing identified hazards, installing amenities and eventually reintroducing powered vessels.
DPTI officers have placed buoys on the Lake where hazards have been identified and anyone coming across any other potential hazards in the water are asked to report them to Wattle Range Council using GPS coordinates.

Those wanting to enjoy the water are reminded to do so safely; use personal floatation devices, carry a radio and remember to let someone know where you are and when you expect to be back.
