Kiwis win Youth AC
A portent of things to come?With the main game in the America’s Cup already embroiled in controversy before it starts on September 7, the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup has run smoothly and been won by New Zealand team NZL Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand.
The other Kiwi team in the event, Full Metal Jacket Racing came in second and the Portugese team ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team were third.
The Australian team Objective Australia suffered some early setbacks but got back into the points late in the regatta to finish seventh.
The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup provided plenty of action over four days of intense competition on San Francisco Bay.
The leaderboard was tight, leading to tense moments on the final day. Just three points separated second from fifth place. When the Swiss Team TILT won race 7, they became the sixth different team to claim a race win in the regatta.
Unfortunately, race 8 -- which was to score double points -- was cancelled with the winds on San Francisco Bay over the limit.
The Youth America’s Cup was raced using the RC45 catamarans which the international teams sailed in the AC World Cup Series.
Emirates Team New Zealand will now face off against Oracle Team USA in the America’s Cup on San Francisco Bay from September 7-21.
