With only a few days until the start of racing in the JJ Giltinan , things are hotting up for the 18 Footers on Sydney Harbour.
The 18 Footer racing on Sydney Harbour has been a part of Australian history since the 1890s. Sponsored by Sydney City Marine, the JJ Giltinan Skiff Championship has a glorious 75 year history.
These "Flying 18s" are the fastest monohull boats in the world and the most spectacular to watch.
The 2014 event will see up to 35 international teams compete over seven exciting days of racing. The best of Australia's sailing talent are on show each week as they wrestle these machines around the harbour in all wind conditions.
In 1937. Mr. James J. Giltinan, Secretary of the Australian 18 Footers League, planned a world championship for 18 foot open boats and the League presented a trophy (popularly known as the JJ Giltinan Trophy) to celebrate the event.
Since the first regatta on Sydney Harbour in 1938, the championship has always been regarded as the world's premier 18 Footer championship and many of its competitors have become world, Olympic and national champions in a variety of yachting classes.
For spectators, the Australian 18 Footers League charters a licensed spectator ferry to follow each race.
The ferry leaves Double Bay Wharf (alongside the clubhouse and rigging area) at 2.15pm each day throughout the season and all visitors are welcome to view the world's most exciting racing.
Tickets can be purchased at the office on race day. Prices are very reasonable at $20 per adult, with kids under 14 free. For further information, contact the club on (02) 9363 2995.
